In a statement, Jung Yoon-jae claimed to have worked hard on perfecting his Chungcheong dialect, and using it to get across the simple yet instinctual nature of his character. Jung Yoon-jae stated that the childish love embodied by his character was of particular relevance for the drama's themes. "Once Upon a Boyhood" is only Jung Yoon-jae's third series following "The Great Shaman Ga Doo-shim" in 2021 and "Missing: The Other Side - Season 2" in 2022.
Jung Yoon-jae also said he had great respect for director Lee Myeong-woo, describing his work as dealing with ideas of purity and passion. Jung Yoon-jae stated that he embodied this sort of energy for his audition to the script readings and onto the actual filming. Jung Yoon-jae expressed hope that this energy and passion was a good fit for the sort of genre story "Once Upon a Boyhood" is and that this would be well-communicated to the viewers.
